Where was God on 9/11?

On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

Many people may say that God caused the pain and suffering brought about on this day, because how could an all-loving and all-powerful God cause this much hurt to so many people? Ending the lives of many and destroying happiness for all their families and the entire world. This was one of the major events to have happened in our lifetime and people believe that if God did exist, this kind of suffering would never happen.
On the other hand, if we look deeper we can see evidence of God helping the people he could in this situation. For example, there were four flights on this tragic day which altogether could accommodate 1,000 people, yet there were only 226 people on board. This suggests he was discouraging people from getting on the planes they were due to catch, and therefore showing his loving nature by saving the lives of others. Also, the people on board the plane somehow had the ability to stay calm through the whole tragedy, and we know this because not one of the people who were called by a loved one on the planes said they sensed any kind of distress or panic. The peace the passengers felt must have come from somewhere and only someone like God could have given them this kind of strength to stay calm in their final minutes. Also, on one of the planes the passengers overpowered the hijackers, so God must have helped them through this and given them the courage to be so brave.
Other events which happened on this day suggests God was doing all he could to prevent people being hurt. Things which wouldn’t normally happen e.g. 30,000 people who normally worked in the twin towers were not at their desks that morning happened, here are a few reasons why: the head of one company survived 9/11 because he took his son to playschool,  another man is alive because it was his turn to bring donuts, another lady was late because her alarm clock didn't go off on time, one spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change, and the most baffling one is a man who walked to work, as normal and on time however was wearing new shoes and developed a blister and therefore stopped to get a plaster; which is why he is alive today. Too many incidents happened on this day for it to have just been a coincidence because when all the evidence comes together, it makes sense to say that God was with them helping them survive. More things like unexpected traffic which made people late for work and meetings scheduled elsewhere makes us believe God was there helping us all along.
The twin towers both stood up for half an hour which gave people on the lower floors time to escape from the burning building, and when the towers finally fell, they fell inwards which saved many people also. When this did happen, he was with all the people trying to help the victims. The firefighters, the police officers and the passers-by who got involved to try and help anyone they could; God gave them the strength to do this. So, on 9/11 God was everywhere, helping those who were affected by the 19 people who decided to turn away from him and doing everything he could to save lives.
Now if you’re ever stuck in traffic, miss the bus or even get up late; the things that normally would annoy you, think to yourself ‘this is where God wants me to be at this very moment’. Next time something small makes you late or annoys you, remember God is there watching over you and everything is happening for a reason.

  1. Very similar to a homework task...? Have a read of this: http://shomrs.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/is-evil-and-suffering-really-challenge_6.html

See if you can follow this up with a second post that takes it further!

    Interesting reflections never the less.

  2. I believe that this is a very interesting view on such a tragic event. I did not think about God being present in all those places and how He was able to save people who would have otherwise been killed. It makes me realise that even when we think things are going wrong, really they are going right because God intended them to unfold that way.

  3. This is a very interesting question to think about, i feel that i have wondered this question for a long time and contiue to do so, how comes God doesnt stop evil and suffering?. However i also believe that everything does happen for a reason and God has given us free will which people have chosen to use to carry out moral evil which i feel God can not change. With the evidence of people who survived and things that made them not be in the wrong place at the wrong time does in fact show that God was and still is present and we should trust in him.

  4. After reading this, I felt very touched to think that God may've caused this triadic event, but done it for only a reason to help show that people are kind enough to help the needy people, under pressure. The amount of deaths will never make up for how bad the event was, but showing that it hasn’t killed the possible 1,000 on board shows that God was always there, and shall always be helping us. However why couldn’t God stop it in the first place? But this shows that we take such simple things for granted and only question Gods existence when it is too late. Which leaves the question are we at fault for the evil and suffering, because we only blame God, and ask for help when it is too late?

  5. I agree with this article because I too believe that God is omnipresent and therefore is always with us. I also agree that God did the loving thing, by changing the plans of people's daily lives e.g. the woman's alarm going off late hence the lady was late to work and luckily escaped the effects of this tragic event. God may have been with the people who were terrified on the hijacked plane, and so he could have given the passengers strength to stay calm throughout the terrible event. Also, God might have been with the many people who were trapped in the burning building and he may have helped them to find their way out. I do not agree with this article however because I do not believe God had control over the whole event, as everyone has free will to make their own decisions therefore God is not to blame for not stopping the event before it had begun. I believe that God did his best to be omni-potent by helping as many as he could after the event had taken place. A question I have is how did God make the decision of who to save, and who to let die during the tragedy - did he have plans in heaven for the people he let die?

  6. Yes, I belive too that God is omnipresent but in my opnion, this terrorist attack is evil caused by humans so God has no part in this. - L.W

  7. I find it very interesting that one can look at such an awful situation and still apply God's love to it. I believe this to be a very non-prositional belief in God's existence. I do not believe God saved these people from a tragic accident due to his omnipresence etc. As although you have picked out a few example's as to why people did not go into work that day, have you looked at the average amount of people who didn't go in on a daily basis? Is the number of 'coincidental' absences actually the norm? Also, if you believe God loves everyone and wanted everyone to live, why were some not saved, and why? As God has Omnipotence, surely he would have the power to do save everyone, or stop the incident happening altogether, I believe this would have been a true miracle. But even then, there would probably have been a logical explanation as to why the towers didn't fall, just as there is for the reason the towers didn't fall for half an hour. Finally, you finished the article by saying that God wants you to be exactly where you are at any moment, so this means God wanted those people who lost their lives on 9/11 to be there, he wanted those people to die. To be taken from their loving families, to lose their lives due to those 19 people who were given the freewill to do so by God. This does not seem Omnibenevolent to me.

  8. I found this article interesting. I believe that the situation was caused my moral evil, the actions of humans and their own free will. I believe that wherever anyone was situated that day, was co-incidental. Everything is just co-incidence. People missed trains that day that were supposed to be in offices etc, and therefore survived, but what about those thousands of innocent people who died. why were they the unfortunate ones? if God is 'omnipotent' and 'omni benevolent', why would this incident have happened? it was all due to moral evil and coincidence.
